Instyler Rotating Iron review

I'm not really sure what I was playing at when I agreed to test out the new Instyler. I'm not really renowned for my hair grooming. My tangled mess usually just gets piled into a messy bun on top of my head & before last weekend my hair probably hadn't seen a brush in about 6 months!
Anyway, whilst the boys were out of the house on Saturday I washed & actually brushed my hair & spent some time doing girl stuff. My Instyler had arrived with an instruction DVD to help me along with styling my hair so before I began I popped it in & watched it over a brew. It was pretty simple to follow & made the styles look easy to achieve, but you can get more help with styling techniques by taking a peak at some of the videos on www.youtube.com/instyleeurope The Instyler was actually really easy to use & super fast at doing it's job. It has this crazy looking rotating cylinder that helped to make my locks actually shine & even I was able to create curls, straighten & add volume. When I have used hot irons to try & curl my hair in the past I've ended up in a right cack handed situation. I've never understood how girls manage to get curls with a rectangular straightener, but these hot irons made it mega easy.
Shockingly, I actually had a good time making myself look girly. The Instyler made it a pain free experience & changed me ever so slightly. I ended my afternoon by listening to R.Kelly (don't tell anyone) & swapping the Nike's for a pair of heels to wear on a date with the old man! Christ, who would have thought it!! Bloody hell, I can't believe I haven't blogged for 2 months!!! I think that's a record. I did warn you I can be a lazy bastard at times though didn't I. Anyway, I just wanted to make it clear to everyone that I am not getting chubby, I have a baby Jawhn growing in my womb!!! Shocking ain't it. You know, I only went on a backpacking / cycling adventure around Cornwall & this is what happened. My mother did warn me this could happen as apparently I was conceived in a tent. Maybe, if it's a girl, I will call her Vango after my tent or Princess Wutania II after my bike? If it's a boy obviously he will be named Rza after his Grandfather. I'm booked in for a photo shoot at Olan Mills later this week so I will get some sick pregnancy shots up of me like all the models & Demi Moore innit.

I love this tea set by Dutch By Design. When the cups are filled with tea it looks as if the girls are in their own hot tub. You know what, hardly anything ever happens in Cardiff that I want to post on the blog & when it does where am I? Chaffing my crotch whilst cycling around fucking Cornwall, that's where!! Last Friday saw the launch party for the relaunch of Puma classic, the Bluebird. The Bluebird, which was originally launched in 1982, became the sneaker of choice with Cardiff City fans back in the day as the design shares its name with the nickname of the Cardiff City football club. Obviously I couldn't go as I was too busy eating pasties, drinking cider & sweating into my padded cycling shorts so I sent one of the boys around to check things out. I think he had a wicked time & was particularly blown away by the mini chocolate eclairs at the event. Always a winner aren't they. Check out his pics he took for us below.

So last night I went out for a beer & 3 pints in started the standard Dead Barbie hip hop lecturing. For those who don't know me, this is something I always do after a few. The alcohol turns this small, white, bleached bitch into a hip hop preacher & if you're not gonna listen to me then you best back the fuck up before you get smacked the fuck up. Yikes! Obviously the next day I always feel a bit of a twat. Last night I got into a Tupac vs Biggie debate & now I feel soooooo ashamed. How could I allow myself to become involved in such wankness? I'm sorry boys. Today I plan to repent by watching endless Biggie & Tupac videos, saying 6 Our Fathers & 4 Hail Mary's.

55DSL's flagship store opened the doors for the evening last night for a night of music, photography, fashion and drinks. Presenting Alex Fakso's new photographic project on the contemporary underground, 55DSL have produced a series of print t-shirts with photographs and graphics from Fakso's new book ''Fast or Die''. Based solely on the street scene around the world, it features graffiti, urban culture and portraits. ''Fast or Die'' was also available to buy and have signed by Alex Fakso throughout the evening. Tunes were being thrown left right and centre from the DJ who provided the party vibes for the evening and large printouts from the book itself were pasted up on the walls whilst the t-shirts were strung across the store giving a great insight to what features in the book.

I don't know about you, but I'm just not down with looking like your average high street bird. You know the look, brogues from Topshop & it's from a charity shop so it must be cool ensemble. Although my fashion life would probably be much easier if I did dress like that. I always find that if I'm not in my usual uniform of Nike, a shirt done right up to the top or an oversized tee I just end up feeling like I'm in drag, which is mental because I have got a vagina after all. Last Thursday, The Cube PR Company held a press day which featured A/W 11 collections from Martine Rose, Camilla Skovgaard, Henri Lloyd and many more. Nina from Cube showed me around the collections explaining a bit about each of the designers and their inspirations. Martine Rose's collection was beautiful and paid alot of attention to detail which has become some what a trademark for her style. The pieces had a sculptural feel to them and a mix of different textures created a layered look. Camilla Skovgaard shoes were to die for and so unique! Although they look like they may be hard to walk in, the pain would be worth it for the beautiful designs and also the colour palette was made up of mostly greys and black making them easy to wear with anything! Another designer that stood out was Zena Khan with her beautiful statement making jewellery, the rings were amazing and should be on everybody's wish list. Sophie Hulme's collection also stood out, again like Martine Rose the collection featured alot of texture, the all pony-haired jacket was a personal favourite and looked so sleek. With her added touch of the charms with each piece, her collection was one not to be missed!

The Queen Of Hoxton Rooftop Bar & Kitchen Launch

Fashion lovers, bloggers and writers all attended The Queen of Hoxton Rooftop bar and kitchen launch on Thursday, invited to enjoy an evening of BBQ food and rum cocktails up on the popular East London bars brand new roof terrace. Decorated with fairy lights and brightly coloured bulbs strung above you the venue created the perfect party vibe but also a great place to just chill with friends whilst listening to the ukulele band. Greeted by walls of illustrations as you walk up to the roof the venue combines art, photography and all things creative into an evening jaunt. The rooftop gives you a great panoramic view of East London where the Queen of Hoxton is situated and don't worry there is trellis surrounding the edge of the bar so no matter how many cocktails you have your not pulling a superman off that roof!

So yeah, I turned 30 on the weekend. Man, I can't believe I'm so old. Shit! Although, on a positive note, you do get some nice presents when you get old. I got the Lunar 180 ACG courtesy of a very kind sneaker freaker friend, some bling, 3 homemade birthday cakes including a Wu Tang cake (sorry about the photo but it got a bit squashed!) & I had a lovely birthday card from Mini Jawhn that said 'Goodbye 20 Year Old Mum'. Nice.

It is a sad, sad day in the Fashionu household. The first bit of news I got this morning was that Nate Dogg had passed away. I grew up listening to anything that was pumped out of Death Row & Nate Dogg was a regular voice played on my Discman. He was like a jolly Uncle dancing around in the background at a party & then he would hit you with his amazing, soulfull voice. If there is such a thing as heaven, I imagine him this very minute sat on a big, fluffy white cloud with Tupac, Eazy E, Biggie, Big L, Big Pun & my beloved Ol' Dirty Bastard. They are all naked with giant wings.

So, how many of you were cosied up at home last night watching the Mugler live stream? Mini Jawhn & I were in our pj's, him with a hot chocolate & me with a bottle of merlot. We dimmed the lights & hooked up the laptop to some speakers. Mini Jawhn said we should do that to create 'some drama'. We both loved the show so much that when it ended Mini J clapped & gave me a cuddle. Bless him! Wouldn't it be amazing if fashion shows were always like that? Some glitz & glamour with a bit of Gaga sprinkled on top!!

I'm sure you all know by now that I had a shit time at London Fashion Week? Between the little dickheads strutting around & my glamorous conjunctivitis, it did my head in this season. I was ready to throw in the towel by day 2 but I powered on through the shows because I'm strong like that maaaaan, a motherfucking soldier. Thank God I did & caught the Cassette Playa show. I sat through the show peering through my squinty, manky eyes & wanted every single piece. The soundtrack was the best all fashion week too, Soulja Boy got everyone nodding away. Fashion shows really should play hip hop more often.

My boy, Mini Jawhn, is the most perfect child I could ever wish for. He gets my weird love for fashion & can hold a conversation about the latest collections, but most importantly he is developing a curiosity for all things hip hop. What a dream child! Unfortunately for him, most hip hop offerings today are pretty lame, but then I am getting pretty old now & I have a musical taste that is trapped in 1993.

Last weekend Mini J showed me Dr.Dre's new video 'I need a doctor'. Jesus Christ Dre what's going on with you? What happened to the days of 'I'm just like a clock when I tick & I tock'. The video is pretty sad & when he's reminiscing about the good old days I did get a lump in my throat, but the actual track is something I would expect to hear blasting from some little pikeys phone on the back of the bus. It's not something I would expect to hear from one of my idols. I hope this track is just a blip & the rest of his new album 'Detox' will remind us of the good old Chronic days.

I can't bring myself to post the new video so let's take it back to 1993 when hip hop was at it's best & I wasn't knocking 30! : (

For the past few years London Fashion Week has been my seasonal highlight, a fashion holiday where I run around like an idiot claiming to be 'working' hard, but really it's a time for me to escape from the Jeremy Kyle like city I live & pretend. Pretend that I have a reason to be at fashion week, pretend that I'm not unemployed for the majority of the year, pretend that I'm always well spoken (keep that Newport accent with your 'innits' & 'yuh know wha I means' well under wraps), pretend that I'm fabulous, pretend, pretend, pretend. Until now I have LOVED the pretence.

I'm not sure why I've suddenly fallen out of love with the experience. Maybe it's because I'm about to hit the big 30 & I'm having some weird rebellious moment, kind of like when you're 13 & your pissed off with your parents or maybe it's because I got conjunctivitis during LFW? Can you imagine, oozing eyes & not being able to wear eye make up, not really the most glamorous look I had hoped for. Um, so yeah, it wasn't my best LFW. However, it wasn't all doom & gloom. There were a few shows that caused me to get a fashion boner, both Katie Eary's & Cassette Playa's collections, as anticipated, were AMAZING! I was also lucky enough to discover some amazing designers at the exhibitions. I will be posting up some reviews this week so keep your eyes peeled. Don't get to close mind, I'm still infected.

Foss has created a new font made out of vintage porn clippings & has made this artwork wearable by printed the font onto t-shirts. There are four t-shirts available & each one features a letter that spells out the projects name.

The fashion fairy Godmother that is Selfridges has hooked up with a handful of the freshest fashion talents around & given them window space to showcase their work along with the opportunity to sell their pieces (which have been designed exclusively for Selfridges) in pop up shops both instore & online.

The designers include Charlie Le Mindu, Sophie Stevens, Kei Kagami, RP/Encore, Alex Noble, Lilee, Simone Rocha, Frances Conteh, Craig Lawrence & Kirsty Ward.

The window installations are up already so if you're near Selfridges then go & have a nose. I can't wait to pop along & take a peak myself.

On/Off Announces New Venue For LFW A/W 2011!

Today On/Off announced its move from Victoria House to 16 Mercer Studios, Covent Garden. I tell you what, I'm so happy about this! I know Somerset House to Victoria House isn't the greatest distance but it don't half play hell with my sky high wedges, not to mention the red, puffy face I get after legging it from one venue to the other. Also, Mini Jawhn will be coming along to LFW in February & although the boy is dedicated I'm not sure his lanky legs will cope with the running back & forth. Fashion Week comes around too quickly doesn't it, it's next month. Bloody hell!

Alright kids? Did you all have a nice christmas & new year? Get anything nice? I got Def Jam Rapstar. Woohoo!! It was actually a joint gift for Mini Jawhn & me but as predicted I hogged it & didn't let anyone else get a look in. After knocking back a bottle of champagne at 10am christmas morning I showcased my well practised vocal skills all christmas day. Mini Jawhn got a camcorder for christmas, recorded me rapping (& by the looks of it attempting to dutty wine??), played it back to me when my hangover kicked in about 5pm & shattered all my rapstar dreams. I would put the video on here but if anyone else sees it I may have to kill myself. FOURTEEN years i've been perfecting that brooklyn twang only to discover I sound more strangled cat than Lil' Kim. It's game over for that dream. Hmmmm what to do next hey? Answers on a postcard please. Happy new year!

On Thursday night, Diary of a Dead Barbie headed to Paradise to celebrate Alice by Alice Temperley's 1st birthday. The party theme was 'English Eccentric' & the kooky fashion crowd didn't disappoint. Guests included Daisy Lowe & Elie Goulding who both played on the old ones & twos & Sophie Ellis Bextor, Lily Donaldson, Bryan Ferry, Bip Ling & Nick Grimshaw.

Unfortunately, I had to stay home to assist Mini Jawhn with a major fashion disaster, so in my place I sent two tweed clad gents to cover the event for me. They drank, fondled other guests & sent me numerous texts declaring their love for Daisy. I think a good time was had by all!

I've been following Bolshie since I met her a few seasons ago during London Fashion Week. I was at the On/Off exhibition drinking red wine from a champagne glass, when I heard this crazy looking bird with braided hair holla at me 'look it's a normal person, I'm so glad to see a normal person'. I'm not sure why she thought I was a normal person, I was engulfed in sequined Ashish & leopard print but then I suppose that is normal in Bolshie's world. I fell in love with the crazy creature on the spot & have looked forward to seeing her each season ever since. Actually, she's probably the highlight of my fashion week. Bolshie is definitely one to watch. As we say here in Newport 'big tings a gwan' ( I will be starting a Newport language course in the forthcoming weeks).
